Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) was angered by the refusal of the FBI to provide information as to the status of their investigation into former Secretary of State Clinton’s secret personal email system.
A month ago U.S. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan instructed the State Department to contact the FBI for assistance with a Freedom of Information Act request from Judicial Watch regarding the employment arrangement of Hillary Clinton’s top aide Huma Abedin. He also requested the State Department to report on the arrangements which were made for information sharing regarding the ongoing investigation.
The FBI replied by letter on Monday, that there would be no information forthcoming, refusing to follow the Judge’s orders, and citing a policy of not revealing details of an ongoing investigation as the basis for their decision.
Senator Grassley was reported in Politico as having “reacted sharply” to their refusal to obey Judge Sullivan’s orders, with information regarding whether or not they have been able to retrieve data from the Clinton thumb drive still unanswered.
Grassley is quoted as saying, “The FBI is behaving like it’s above the law. Simply refusing to cooperate with a court-ordered request is not an appropriate course of action. This entire case, from Secretary Clinton’s ill-advised decision to use a non-government email server, to the FBI’s investigation about classified information, needs some transparency in order to assure the American people that getting to the bottom of this controversy is a priority.”
Grassley did not elaborate on what his next move might be, nor did Judge Sullivan, who could order the FBI to cooperate directly.
In refusing to comply with Judge Sullivan’s instructions, FBI General Counsel James Baker wrote, “At this time, consistent with long-standing Department of Justice and FBI policy, we can neither confirm nor deny the existence of any ongoing investigation, nor are we in a position to provide additional information at this time.”
It certainly has the feel of more of the same old cover-up, which is consistent with this executive branch and the DOJ under this criminal administration. There are those who felt comfortable with FBI Director Comey’s integrity and independence as being a sufficient counterweight to Obama’s corruption. We may now be learning that that confidence was misplaced.
Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch, who filed the request in question, said, “The FBI has evidently decided to stonewall the court’s legitimate inquiry here and the State Department is going along with it. We’re seeking quick court action to find out where these records might be.”
Judicial Watch has requested that Judge Sullivan move up a hearing set for next week to address these latest developments.
While Sullivan did not directly order the FBI to cooperate in his order last month, Fitton is of the opinion that the time to do so may have now arrived. Clearly absent any action by the Judge there will be no cooperation and the process will be obstructed.
Fitton pointed out, “The FBI might be asked questions. … If it’s going to be that the FBI can’t talk about where her records might be, certainly she [Clinton] should be able to disclose whether they exist and where.”
As the information outlined in the rather detailed Politico article indicates, a deliberate effort to obstruct and obfuscate is clearly under way between the perpetrator and the complicit parties within the State Department, the Obama regime, and apparently now, those who are responsible for the investigation.
There has never been any doubt that the individuals occupying leadership positions within the Obama regime feel they are above the law. It’s also never been so vividly demonstrated before that they have ample justification for holding those beliefs.
